After decades of engagement, the US-China relationship is at one of its lowest points. Tensions increased as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2019 trade war, and the US being vocal about human rights issues and China’s growing military influence in the region. Why is China is more aggressively asserting its power and challenging the United States now? As the world faces multiple challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, can the United States and China collectively address issues of common interest or will their competition dominate future relations?

Before joining the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Bonnie Glaser was senior adviser for Asia and the director of the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. For more than three decades, she has worked at the intersection of Asia-Pacific geopolitics and US policy.
Senior Counselor, The Cohen Group
Before joining The Cohen Group, retired Lieutenant General Charles Hooper served as the Director of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) and U.S. Defense Attaché to the People’s Republic of China. He has spent much of his 41-year military career working on US policy in the Indo-Pacific region, and specifically on the US-China bilateral relationship.

Cheng Li is the director of the John L. Thornton China Center and a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. He is also a director of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Li is the author of the forthcoming book Middle Class Shanghai: Reshaping U.S.-China Engagement (May 2021).

Dali L. Yang is a non-resident senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, with expertise in the global economy and Asia. Currently, he is the William Claude Reavis Professor in the department of political science at the University of Chicago. He’s also the founding faculty director of the University of Chicago Center in Beijing
