About this Event
Sports diplomacy is an important tool to facilitate communication among countries and cultures. For many countries, hosting a major sporting event, such as the Olympic Games, is a way to increase international prestige; however, these events can also be a powerful platform for promoting gender and racial equity. For the first time in history, the Tokyo Olympics later this year will have almost an equal number of female and male athletes. How can we build on this progress to ensure more diverse representation in sports?
About the Speakers
Jennifer Cooper
Political Analysis and Programme Development Specialist, UN Women
In addition to her experience with UNICEF and the United National Population Fund (UNFPA), Cooper has spent her career with UN Women. She also leads partnerships with global sport organizations, including the International Olympic Committee and FIFA, harnessing the massive power of sport internationally to challenge gender stereotypes and promote opportunities for women and girls through sport.
Mao Yamaguchi
Research Fellow, Nippon Sport Science University
Mao Yamaguchi is a research fellow on the strategic bilateral partnership through sports where she participates in a governmental project for expanding the number of nations and regions participating in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. She previously worked at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Distinguished Fellow, Global Food and Agriculture
Catherine Bertini served as executive director of the UN World Food Program, the world’s largest international humanitarian agency, from 1992 to 2002 prior to joining the Council. She was named the World Food Prize laureate in 2003 for her groundbreaking leadership there.
