The Summit for Democracy on December 9 and 10 brought together the heads of over 100 countries to discuss the state of political freedom around the world. Convened by President Biden, the summit struck a somber tone, as participants grappled with the growing power of authoritarian states and the rising popularity of populist leaders within the democratic world.

About the Speakers
President, Freedom House
Before joining Freedom House in February 2017, Michael J. Abramowitz was director of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Levine Institute for Holocaust Education. He led the museum’s genocide prevention efforts and later oversaw its public education programs. Previously, he was national editor and then White House correspondent for the Washington Post.
CEO, Chicago Council on Global Affairs
Ivo H. Daalder served as the US ambassador to NATO from 2009 to 2013. He joined the Council as president in 2013 and took on the new role of CEO in 2023. Previously, he was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution and served as director for European affairs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council. He is the author or editor of 10 books.
Former Prime Minister, Denmark
Anders Fogh Rasmussen has been at the center of European and global politics for three decades as Secretary-General of NATO, Prime Minister of Denmark, Danish Minister of Economic Affairs, Danish Minister for Taxation, and a leading Danish parliamentarian. During the Danish presidency of the EU, he played a key role in concluding accession negotiations with 10 candidates for EU membership.

Nathalie Tocci is director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali and honorary professor at the University of Tübingen. She is special advisor to EU High Representative and Vice President of the Commission Josep Borrell. As special advisor to HRVP Federica Mogherini, she wrote the European Global Strategy and worked on its implementation.
