About This Event
Fraying American alliances and a rapidly changing security environment have shaken America’s nuclear security guarantees and threaten the 50-year-old nuclear nonproliferation regime. Examining the issue from the perspective of the Indo-Pacific region, a panel of experts will consider how the United States and its allies can halt this dangerous slide.
This event is hosted by the Perth USAsia Centre at the University of Western Australia in collaboration with the Council and is free to attend.
About the Speakers
CEO, Chicago Council on Global Affairs
Ivo H. Daalder served as the US ambassador to NATO from 2009 to 2013. He joined the Council as president in 2013 and took on the new role of CEO in 2023. Previously, he was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution and served as director for European affairs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council. He is the author or editor of 10 books.
Chief Executive Officer, Perth USAsia Centre, University of Western Australia
Gordon Flake is the founding Chief Executive Officer of the Perth USAsia Centre at The University of Western Australia. Professor Flake is one of the world’s leading authorities on strategic developments in the Indo-Pacific having spent twenty-five years in the US foreign policy community focused on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
Australian Ambassador for Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation
Amanda Gorely is Australia’s inaugural Ambassador for Arms Control and Counter-Proliferation where she leads Australia’s international advocacy on global arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament. Gorely is a senior career officer with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is currently First Assistant Secretary, International Security Division.
Kori Schake
Director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies, American Enterprise Institute
Prior to the American Enterprise Institute, Kori Schake was the deputy director-general of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. She has had a distinguished career in government, working at the US State Department, the US Department of Defense, and the National Security Council at the White House.
Professor of Public International Law, University of Western Australia
Stephen Smith has been a Professor of Public International Law at the University of Western Australia since 2014. Smith was Federal Member for Perth for the Australian Labor Party from 1993 through 2013. In a career spanning 20 years in the Australian Federal Parliament, Professor Smith served as the Minister for Defence, and prior to that, as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Trade.
